GEA Group Completes Massive Greenfield SAP S/4HANA Implementation

GEA Group runs more than 60 different ERP systems. When a directive was provided by the board to bring all of these systems into one single platform in a harmonized environment, the company prepared to undergo a complete fundamental transformation. At the time, GEA’s IT landscape contained disparate business processes as a result of following a heavy acquisition strategy for years. Now, the company is half-way through their 10-year plan to implement SAP S/4HANA using a greenfield approach and following a cloud-first strategy.

According to the company’s CIO, Christian Niederhagemann, this is GEA’s second attempt to move to one ERP system. The first attempt failed, he said, because the project was purely driven by IT and did not consider perspectives from business users and operational employees. To avoid running into the same problem twice, this time around the project team surveyed and interviewed more than 50 stakeholders and nominees from the shop floor to learn about their requirements and daily needs. Niederhagemann also attributes their success to following best practices, and now, the company is well on its way to entering the next stage of digitalization.

McKesson Prepares Four Workstreams for an SAP S/4HANA Roll Out

McKesson’s distributed IT environment contains a complexity level comparable to conglomerates such as Amazon and Procter & Gamble. The healthcare company’s SAP stack alone includes 24 SAP instances (running both SAP ERP and SAP S/4HANA systems) with extensive customizations developed by McKesson and third-party developers. And McKesson is not just an SAP shop—its SAP footprint closely interconnects with many other packaged and custom applications. As part of the organization’s three-year roadmap to simplify its IT landscape and reach its goal of completing rapid software updates without experiencing business disruption, McKesson is undergoing one of the largest SAP S/4HANA migrations in the healthcare industry.

In order to successfully migrate the company’s 24 SAP systems to SAP S/4HANA and to the cloud, as well as consolidate key applications, processes, and technologies, McKesson has relied heavily on advanced test automation. With an SAP S/4HANA rollout under way in Europe and 13 countries and four workstreams scheduled to go live over the next three years, McKesson is on schedule to complete its rollout by 2022.

Vodafone Sets New Benchmark on Its Intelligent Enterprise Journey

In 2017 Vodafone made the decision to enter the next digital era in order to keep pace with its competitors in the telecommunications industry. Migrating to SAP S/4HANA proved to be the best way to get there, and to get leadership on board, the company’s Head of Corporate Transformation relied heavily on a benefits-driven business case containing measurable key performance indicators backed by middle management. The result? The company went live on one of the largest SAP S/4HANA instances in the world—in just 18 months. No easy task, considering the company needed to migrate a single-instance solution utilized by more than 22 countries. Nonetheless, Vodafone was able to use its KPIs developed during the business case stage to realize the progress of the metrics.

Not only did the company realize progress from the SAP S/4HANA migration, it also implemented multiple other SAP solutions in parallel with the SAP S/4HANA migration—including cloud solutions such as SAP Concur, SAP SuccessFactors, SAP Ariba, and SAP Fieldglass solutions—and integrated those solutions with SAP S/4HANA. Vodafone is looking forward to upgrading to the next release version of SAP S/4HANA in November of this year.
